More than a typing speed test

A WPM number tells you how fast you typed. It doesn't tell you where the time went. Your results here show both.

MetricWhat it tells you
Net WPMYour headline speed. Counts only words you typed completely correctly.
Raw WPMHow fast your fingers moved, mistakes included
AccuracyShare of keypresses that were correct. Fixing a mistake doesn't erase it.
ConsistencyHow steady your pace was, second by second

You also get your mistake rate, corrected and uncorrected errors, the speed of every single word, and the keys you miss most. Each one has a published formula on the typing speed scoring methodology page, and the same formulas run again on our server from your keystroke log, so the saved score always matches the one on your screen.

One test, worked through

Say you take the 1-minute typing test. You make 310 keypresses, 10 of them wrong. You fix 7 with backspace and leave 3, each in a different word. Your final text is 303 characters long, and 47 of its 50 words are perfect, adding up to 282 characters with their spaces.

  • Net WPM: 56 (282 ÷ 5)
  • Raw WPM: 61 (303 ÷ 5)
  • Accuracy: 97% (300 of 310 keypresses right)
  • Consistency: 88% (your per-second speed averaged 61 and varied by about 7)

A site that counts every correct character, not every correct word, would call that about 60 WPM. Same fingers, same minute. That's why we show both numbers and say which is which.

What is a good typing speed?

About 40 WPM is a good everyday benchmark. 60 to 75 WPM is a strong target for jobs that involve a lot of typing. Above 100 WPM is very fast.

Speed is only half of it, though. Someone typing 70 WPM at 98% accuracy usually gets more done than someone typing 85 WPM who keeps stopping to fix mistakes.

The best public benchmark comes from a 2018 study by Aalto University and the University of Cambridge: 168,000 volunteers, 136 million keystrokes, everyone typing randomised sentences. The average was 52 WPM and the fastest reached 120 WPM. That average runs high. The volunteers were mostly young, interested in typing, and over 70% had taken a touch-typing class. The general population is slower.

Why do you get different WPM scores on different typing test websites?

You scored 85 somewhere else and 68 here. Neither number is wrong. Three things change the result:

  1. The scoring rule. Some tests count every correct character. Others, like this one, count only fully correct words, which scores lower for the same typing.
  2. The text. Common lowercase words are easier than sentences with capitals, punctuation and numbers.
  3. The length. A short test can catch one fast burst. A longer one shows the speed you can keep up.

To compare fairly, keep all three the same. The scoring methodology lists the main ways typing tests count WPM, and why your WPM differs between sites goes into more detail.

Test your typing speed, find your weak keys and improve

Knowing your speed is step one. Getting faster means knowing what slows you down.

After every test, your results show which keys you miss most and which words you keep missing. Practice then builds fifty-word drills from those exact keys and words, mixed with common words so it still reads like a real test. Practise, retest under the same conditions, and watch the trend.

Two findings from the 136-million-keystroke study are worth knowing before you start:

  • People who'd taken a typing course were no faster than self-taught typists. They just used more fingers. One of the authors, Anna Feit, said you don't need to switch to touch typing to get faster.
  • The fastest typists overlap their keys. Between 40% and 70% of their keypresses started before the previous key was released.

Hold about 97% accuracy before you push for speed, keep your eyes on the screen, and test on the same mode each week. For a step-by-step plan, see from 40 to 80 WPM.

Practice typing tests for jobs and government exams

Employer typing tests usually report net WPM together with an accuracy figure, so check how the posting counts errors. 40 WPM with a strict error penalty is harder than 50 WPM raw.

For Indian government exams, the exam typing test presets copy the official format and length:

ExamRequired speedLength
SSC CHSL typing test (LDC / JSA)35 WPM English (≈ 10,500 key depressions/hour) or 30 WPM Hindi (≈ 9,000)10 min
SSC CHSL Data Entry Operator8,000 key depressions/hour15 min

Also available: SSC CGL data entry skill test, CPCT Hindi typing test, RRB NTPC typing test, court stenographer practice, plus 5-minute and 10-minute Hindi typing tests. Standards can change between recruitment cycles, so always check the current official notification. More in typing tests for government exams in India.

Test your typing speed on a mobile phone

The test works on phones. Phone results are scored the same way, but they stay off the public leaderboards for now, because typing on a touchscreen is a different skill. A 2019 study of 37,370 people found an average of 36.2 WPM on smartphones, and the fastest reached 85. Typing with both thumbs and keeping autocorrect on helped most. Your result records whether autocorrect was used.

Frequently asked questions

What is a typing speed test?

A typing speed test times how fast and how accurately you copy a piece of text. It reports your speed in words per minute (WPM) and your accuracy as a percentage.

How is typing speed calculated?

Every five characters you type, including spaces and punctuation, count as one word. Net WPM takes the characters in words you typed completely correctly, divides by 5, then divides by the minutes elapsed. The scoring methodology has every formula.

What is WPM?

WPM means words per minute. Because real words vary in length, a "word" is standardised as five characters, so scores stay comparable across different texts.

What is the difference between net WPM and raw WPM?

Raw WPM counts everything you typed, right or wrong. Net WPM only counts words you got completely right. A big gap between the two means accuracy is holding you back.

What is a good typing speed?

About 40 WPM is good for everyday use. 60 to 75 WPM is a strong target for typing-heavy jobs, and anything over 100 WPM is very fast.

What is the average typing speed?

In a study of 168,000 volunteers by Aalto University and the University of Cambridge, the average was 52 WPM on a keyboard. Those volunteers were keener typists than most people, so the general average is likely lower. On smartphones, a separate study found 36.2 WPM.

Is 40 WPM good?

Yes. 40 WPM is enough for school, email and most office work. For transcription or data entry, aim for 60 WPM or more with at least 95% accuracy.

How can I improve my typing speed?

Keep your accuracy around 97% before chasing speed, watch the screen instead of your hands, and practise the keys that slow you down. Practice builds drills from your own mistakes.

Can I take a typing test without signing up?

Yes. Every test runs without an account and your results save on your device. Signing in is optional and adds history across devices, personal bests and leaderboards.

Can I take a typing speed test on my phone?

Yes. The test works on mobile, and your phone results are saved like any other. They stay off the public leaderboards for now, because touchscreen typing is usually slower than a keyboard.

How long should a typing test be?

One minute is the standard benchmark. Use five minutes for job applications, and match the exact length of any exam you're preparing for, such as 10 minutes for SSC CHSL.

Are typing speed tests accurate?

They're accurate for what they measure, but sites measure different things. This test publishes every formula and recomputes each saved result from its keystroke log. Compare scores from the same site, text and length.
