KPH test (keystrokes per hour)
Loading the test…
This KPH test measures your data-entry speed in keystrokes per hour. Numbers and punctuation are switched on, the result is shown in characters per minute, and multiplying by 60 gives your KPH. The digits appear inside running text, so most people type them on the number row; if you're practising for a 10-key test, you can type every digit on the numeric keypad instead. It's free, and you don't need an account.
How the KPH test works
Data-entry material is mostly figures, codes and short fields, so this page turns on the numbers and punctuation toggles and sets the speed unit to characters per minute. When you finish, the results screen shows your net and raw speed in characters per minute (multiply by 60 for KPH), accuracy and the keys you missed most.
Our net figure counts only characters in words you typed completely right. Raw counts every character. Many employer tests count every keystroke and report accuracy separately, so check which one your target test uses and quote the matching number. The scoring methodology page explains both.
Is this a 10-key test?
Not strictly. A 10-key test is usually a column of numbers typed on the numeric keypad alone, with no letters at all. This test mixes digits into words and punctuation, which is closer to alphanumeric data entry: names, addresses, invoice lines. The test accepts a digit from either the number row or the keypad, so keypad users can still practise their keypad work here, but your score will also reflect your letter speed. For digits on their own, the number typing test has a fingering chart for the number row.
Converting WPM, CPM and KPH
One standard word is five characters, so the conversions are fixed:
- WPM × 5 = characters per minute (CPM)
- CPM × 60 = keystrokes per hour (KPH)
- so WPM × 300 = KPH, and KPH ÷ 300 = WPM
For example, 50 WPM × 5 = 250 CPM, and 250 × 60 = 15,000 KPH.
| WPM | CPM | KPH |
|---|---|---|
| 20 | 100 | 6,000 |
| 30 | 150 | 9,000 |
| 35 | 175 | 10,500 |
| 40 | 200 | 12,000 |
| 50 | 250 | 15,000 |
| 60 | 300 | 18,000 |
| 70 | 350 | 21,000 |
| 80 | 400 | 24,000 |
Going the other way, from a KPH requirement to the speed you need:
| KPH required | CPM | WPM equivalent |
|---|---|---|
| 6,000 | 100 | 20 |
| 8,000 | 133.3 | 26.7 |
| 10,000 | 166.7 | 33.3 |
| 12,000 | 200 | 40 |
A word of caution on comparing figures: a WPM score here counts only correct words, while a KPH figure from an employer may count every key you pressed, right or wrong. The same typing can produce a noticeably higher number on a test that counts gross keystrokes.
What is a good KPH?
Private employers set their own thresholds and often test on their own software, so there's no single standard. The clearest published benchmarks come from India's Staff Selection Commission. Its CHSL write-up sets the Data Entry Operator skill test at 8,000 key depressions per hour. For the CGL Data Entry Skill Test, its instructions describe a passage of about 2,000 key depressions in 15 minutes, which is also 8,000 an hour. Its typing test instructions equate 35 WPM in English with 10,500 key depressions per hour, the same ×300 rule as the table above.
So 8,000 KPH, about 27 WPM, is a realistic floor for alphanumeric entry. Rules change between notifications, so check the current notice, and remember that the exam counts differently from us. The SSC CGL DEST and SSC CHSL presets set up the matching durations.
How to raise your KPH
Accuracy first. Data-entry tests punish wrong figures harder than slow ones, because a wrong digit in an account number is worse than no entry at all.
Learn the number row by touch. Most of the lost time is the glance down for a 6 or a 7 and the search back to your place in the text.
Practise in longer blocks. Data-entry tests often run 10 or 15 minutes, and speed fades with time. The 15-minute typing test shows whether yours holds up.
Read the results screen. The most-missed keys list tells you which digits or marks to drill; practice builds short sessions around any letter keys among them.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert WPM to KPH?
Multiply by 300. That's five characters per word times sixty minutes, so 40 WPM is 12,000 KPH. To go back, divide KPH by 300.
Can I use the numeric keypad on this test?
Yes, for the digits. The test checks the character you typed, not the key that produced it. Letters and punctuation still come from the main keyboard.
Does the KPH figure count my mistakes?
Our net figure leaves out wrong words entirely, and raw counts everything. Pick the one that matches how your target test counts.
How long should a KPH test be?
This page times one minute, which is enough for a first reading; five minutes gives a more stable baseline. For exam practice, use the length of the real test: the SSC data-entry test runs 15 minutes.
