What this covers
This statement applies to the whole site: the typing test, results, settings, history, leaderboards and information pages. We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA.
Before each release, we test with a keyboard only, with NVDA in Firefox, with VoiceOver in Safari, at 200% zoom, and with automated checks (axe-core) on every page.
What works
Keyboard. You can reach everything with a keyboard. Press ? to see the shortcuts. Focus is always visible, and the header never covers it.
Errors aren't shown by colour alone. A wrong character changes colour and is underlined or struck through. You can add a sound or vibration too, and a colour-blind mode adjusts the palette further.
Contrast. Every built-in theme meets a 4.5:1 contrast ratio for text and 3:1 for controls.
Text and zoom. You can change the font size of the test text. The layout holds at 200% zoom without sideways scrolling. Lexend and OpenDyslexic fonts are available in settings.
Time limits. In a timed test, the time limit is the thing being measured, which WCAG treats as an essential exception. If you'd rather not be timed, word, quote and zen modes do the same job with no clock. The countdown is always visible, and you can turn on a warning sound at 10, 5 or 3 seconds.
Reduced motion. If your system asks for reduced motion, the smooth caret, flashes, chart animation and confetti are all switched off. You can override this either way in settings.
Target size. Every control is at least 24 × 24 CSS pixels, and a large-targets setting raises that to 44.
Screen readers. Your result is announced when the test ends, for example "Test complete: 59 WPM, 96% accuracy". Live stats aren't read out while you type, so they don't interrupt you. Only a rejected result interrupts you as an alert.
Help in the same place. The help and shortcut links sit in the same spot in the footer on every page.
Known gaps
We'd rather list these than pretend they don't exist:
- The on-screen keyboard doesn't show key labels for Hindi and other Indic layouts yet, so next-key hints aren't available for those languages.
- The results chart is visual. All of its data is in the per-word table underneath, but the chart itself isn't described in text beyond its summary numbers.
- Keyboard layout emulation only remaps keys inside the typing area. If you use a screen reader and rely on your operating system's layout, leave emulation off.
- You can't remap the keyboard shortcuts yet, or adjust letter spacing and line height.
- There's no custom theme editor yet, so you can't build your own high-contrast theme.
- Screen readers don't announce mistakes as you make them. You hear about them in the result at the end.
We update this list after every audit.
