213 quotes

437 passages from classic books in 7 languages, every one in the public domain. These are the same texts quote mode uses, so anything you type here counts toward that quote's records.

Why type quotes instead of random words?

Random word tests measure raw finger speed. Quotes measure something closer to real typing: capital letters, commas, quotation marks, the odd semicolon, and words you don't type every day. Expect a slightly lower score on quotes than on word tests. If you type for work, that lower number is probably the more honest one.

Quotes are also more fun. It's easier to stay focused on Sherlock Holmes than on a list of the 200 most common words.

What's in the library

LanguageQuotesAuthors
English213Jane Austen, Mary Shelley, Herman Melville, Lewis Carroll, Arthur Conan Doyle, Charles Dickens, Mark Twain, plus Machiavelli and Tolstoy in translation
Russian56Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, Pushkin, Gogol
Portuguese45Machado de Assis, Eça de Queirós
Italian34Alessandro Manzoni, Carlo Collodi
German33Goethe, Kafka
Spanish28Miguel de Cervantes
French28Victor Hugo

The Portuguese passages keep the spelling of the early editions they come from, so you'll type elle and annos as printed. It's a nice extra challenge.

Pick your length

Every quote falls into one of four lengths:

LengthCharactersGood for
Shortup to 99a quick burst, or warming up
Medium100 to 300a normal session
Long301 to 600sustained speed and focus
Thiccover 600endurance, and finding out where your accuracy slips

If you're comparing your speed over time, stick to one length. A short quote and a 700-character one will give you very different numbers.

How we chose the passages

Every passage starts and ends on a full sentence and runs from 60 to 1,000 characters. We picked them evenly from the start, middle and end of each book, not just the famous opening lines. Anything with brackets, digits, footnote markers or headings in capitals was left out, and a person read through the final set.

Pick a quote and type it here

Click any quote in the list and it loads straight into the test at the top of this page, along with that quote's records. It's a good way to find out whether a passage was hard for you or just hard. Each quote is tagged with its author and book, and the full list of books and licences is on the credits page.

Want a quote picked for you? The quote typing test chooses one at random, and the daily challenge gives everyone the same text each day.
